As always, thanks Ben - loads to look up, particularly the stuff with Tom M. Its only in the last few years I’ve looked properly at the labels on records to see who’s who so love these connections!

Tangent alert… After randomly seeing The Bays way back in 2008 (?) at Glade and then nothing until 2023 & 2024 it led me to dig into who they are and it was then I clocked onto Tom and… deeper I go; its like a full time job lol.

Weee! Yeah, Pritchard with or without Middleton has so many productions that it is just a matter of preference which 10 ones you want to highlight. So, mine, without links, in sections

A. The ambient-y very 90s stuff

* The track donated to the Warp's "Artificial Intelligence" series is a very Global Communication one, with choir pads - talking about "Link - Arcadian". I think the melodic touches are very Middleton, the way the melody is constructed and has that bridge to a very lullaby kind of arpeggio.

* The Reload mix of Aphex Twin's "On". Again very much on the same frequency - Middleton here adopts the riff of the original and warps it around the ambient bag of tricks he had. I love everything about it, but mostly how 90s it sounds, how futuristic, Larry Heard sci-fi, jazzy, and syncopated it all is. I cannot decide it if plays better before the Aphex Twin original or immediately after.

* And it is very hard from me to highlight anything from "A collection of short stories", an absolutely stunning piece of ambient that I think is above anything released by Global Comm. When it gets industrial it gets dark, when it gets pretty it goes to highs as the waltzy "Le soleil et la mer". But my favourite is a bit of an outlier there, and at the same time following the bag of tricks of the previous two: Ahn, with two intersecting arpeggio riffs that meet at the end of the track, and a breakbeat/electro pattern driving it all.

B. The other

* Chicago. Hit me at the right time (this means, at 3 am in an altered state of body and mind in a sweaty club). That Roy Ayers sample stretched works. I find it frustrating how many of the early to mid 90s house tracks are still played nowadays because they feel more forward thinking that whatever came since the mid 00s, and here is an example.

* The Pulusha EP is a one off that may be a bit overrated because of it was so limited, but I still think it works really really well. Not better than 76:14 at its ambient best, but at the same level. Also, Kirsty Hawkshaw.

* His productions as Troubleman do not do much for me except for the one mentioned in the previous post, "Lullaby". There are some similarities between the isolated keyboard stabs here and the arpeggios of the 90s ambient, and at the same time I remember how many producers in the early 00s tried their hand at a polished version of broken beat ending up being a bit generic though very true to their tropes... and this one is better than its elements, stretching effortlessly to its almost 10 minutes.

There are many other offerings, many very experimental and/or harsh (the Harmonic alias) which can be the preferred ones by others. But I am a very basic man driven by melodies and polyrhythms, and these ones are the ones that excite me.
