Philip Sherburne and I after recording a podcast in 2018 (ish). I swear I don’t always look this tired. Picture by Philip Sherburne. Thank you!
Philip Sherburne and I started the Line Noise podcast back in January 2016. The idea was, if I recall rightly, to do something like the New York Times Popcast, which we both enjoyed, but for electronic music. We decided to give it a go - you can hear the first episode here, in which we talk Bowie and Matmos - and if we didn’t get 400 listens we would knock it on the head.
Nine years and countless microphone adventures on, today I published the 200th episode of the Line Noise podcast, which features an interview with Wolfgang Voigt about GAS, a fitting subject for a landmark episode.
I say 200th episode. It’s actually the 225th, as I have also done a series of podcasts to support my Daft Punk book and another series to celebrate Nitsa’s 30th anniversary. Much as I like these series, they are offshoots so Wolfgang Voigt’s episode is the 200th. And no one else is going to celebrate it, so I hope you will excuse this post.
Below are some of my favourite Line Noise interviews. Please do check them out. I like to think there is something for everyone. But, really, there is lots for me. And below that, I have a little bit of Line Noise history for you. I’ve linked to the episodes on Soundcloud. We’re also on Spotify, if you like. And I will, obviously, be looking at the listening statistics today so please don’t make me cry at my own party.

A brief history
Philip Sherburne left Line Noise in 2017 to go and live in Menorca and do lots of wonderful things (including the excellent Lapsus radio show with Albert Salinas, although he has been back a few times.)
I joined Radio Primavera Sound in 2018 and Line Noise has existed under the RPS wing since then. For a year or so, the very talented Barcelona producer Braqueberry was my co-host - but the last few years I have been going it alone, as Line Noise has become basically an interview podcast. (Although shout out to Johann Wald, Mark Dix and Mar Vallverdú, who have all helped out with Line Noise interviews.)
Since 2024, Line Noise also has a sponsor, in the shape of Cupra, so thanks to them.
I don’t want to go overboard but Line Noise has given me the opportunity to interview some of my very favourite artists over the years and I want to thank each and every one of them. We’ve had one complaint over the 200 episodes and that was about the cover art. So I think we are doing OK.
Obviously, some dream interviews remain - Aphex Twin, Björk, Ralf Hütter, Burial (who I actually did try for and Hyperdub were nice enough to at least pretend to take the request seriously), Todd Edwards, Fever Ray, Carl Craig, Thomas Bangalter, 4 Hero, Pepe Bradock, Norma Jean Bell, Kate Bush, Deep Dish and more - so if anyone can hook me up with any of them, I would be much obliged.
(Actually one of them is close to confirmed. But I will leave that up to your imagination.)
what an amazing body of work! big up
Congratulations on your anniversary and, cheekily, here's my wish list for interviews, just a few - and just in case any of them chime with you! In no particular order:
