I made the classic amateur mistake of being 6 years old during the Alive 2007 tour. When I got into them in middle school, I played the live album on repeat and vowed to make it to the next tour, no matter where I was in life. Then they announced their breakup, and I slowly made peace with the idea that I'd never see them at all. I saw Justice's Hyperdrama tour thrice, it was incredible each time, some of my favorite shows ever. I thought I'd gotten over Daft Punk. Then Fred announced a very special guest for his Pompidou show, and I knew that I wasn't over shit. Then he brought Thomas back for the final show; I was in shambles at that point.
Fred just posted the Ally Pally set to Youtube, I'm 10 minutes in and have already been hit with dozens of waves of pure depression-inducing FOMO. Watching it feels like listening to Alive 2007 for the first time again, but now with the fact that it was theoretically possible for me to have been there. It wasn't practically possible though; I'm pretty sure Fred announced Thomas would be appearing less than 12 hours before both shows, so I don't think I would have been able to make it even if I took PTO, somehow found a ticket, and booked a last minute intercontinental flight and hotel. This reasoning is the only way I've been able to cope. Just needed to rant, I don't know what else to do with this energy besides pray something like this happens again with more than a day's notice.
Hello Al. I was thinking about what you said on my walk this morning. And this is what I concluded.I have been going to gigs for 35 years now, pretty regularly, amd festivals. And I have seen some amazing things. But I have also missed some incredible gigs I could very easily have seen. And I am fine with that. So I saw Broadcast but I never saw Bowie. I saw Daft Punk but I never saw Cocteau Twins. I saw Mazzy Star but I didn't see Jeff Buckley, even though I was at a festival he played and my friend did go and see him. I didn't see that Radiohead 97 gig but I did see them in 1992 supporting the Frank and Walters. Also, being my age, bands who you didn't see tend to come around again. Like Sisters of Mercy. Echo and the Bunnymen. And sometimes they are a disappointment, sometimes a wonder.You are mid 20s, I think? Exactly the same thing will happen to you. (Where do you live BTW? Are there lots of gigs?). In fact, I bet you have already seen at least one gig that people in 20 years will be amazed by. And it might not be the one you think.So never mind about missing Bangalter and Fred. Better things will come.
Yep, 24! I live in the SF bay area, so I've had no trouble seeing artists on tour. I've seen a few dozen artists live by now, and of course I've had some transcendent experiences (Justice, Gesaffelstein, Parcels, Fleet Foxes). There are also artists I wish I had seen (Fred x Skrillex x Four Tet, Caroline Polachek's last tour). Those don't bother me too much though; I've caught an amazing Fred solo set, and I expect to have the chance to see the other artists in the future.
Daft Punk are different in that they are far above any other artist on the list of artists I'd like (need) to see in my lifetime. No other artist has such a vast collection of songs I've fantasized about hearing live, and it doesn't help that I'm counting their Roule and Crydamoure work. They were the first artist I chose to get into back in middle school, and formed the base of my music taste (probably to no surprise to you). So there's an extra-personal aspect separating them from the rest.
re: bands coming back, I'd say chances of a Daft Punk or adjacent tour in the next few decades are nonzero. Better or worse than Alive 2007, it'll probably be enough for me!
I've loved going to shows with other artists, and once this set leaves my mind, I think I'll go back to appreciating them. For now though, there's a renewed, powerful sense that Daft Punk are The One That Got Away. Kind of like Past Lives, if you've seen it.
By the way, I've finished watching the set, and just wanted to share that my favorite moment was Thomas mixing Can't Do Without You with a song his son made. Seemed to be a surprise to his son, as he evidently started crying once he realized what he was doing. The simplicity of the message makes it all the more moving (perhaps the Daft Punk ethos). Thomas also kept glancing at his son with a big ass smile while he was struggling to hold it together, and I think even gave him a cheeky thumbs up. Incredible.
I imagine Thomas will do some more DJing in the future. Not a big tour or something but maybe a few dates, given how much he enjoyed it.
Personally, I think that Thomas and Guy-Man will work together at some point in the future - maybe to do a song - but I would be surprised if we got a Daft Punk reunion and even if we did, I think a tour is pretty unlikely. That said, I wouldn't rule out an Abba Voyage type thing!
if it's any help, you know that Radiohead Glastonbury 1997 gig that is sometimes called the best ever gig? I was at that Glastonbury. But I wasn't at that gig! I think I was maybe seeing Primal Scream. But not entirely sure.

Undoubtedly this would have been an amazing gig. But you will see better! No doubt whatsoever.
